Getting there and around

The town is compact and most of what you need is within easy walking distance of the tourist office. Some of the B&Bs in the residential areas are quite a distance from the centre, but there’s an hourly town bus service, or hire a taxi.

Air

Flybe/Loganair, T0871-700 2000, http://www.flybe.com, flies to Glasgow, Mon-Sat, 2 daily, 1 hr. There is a also a daily flight to Edinburgh, 1 hr, and flights from Inverness Mon-Sat, 4 daily, 40 mins.

Bus

From Stornoway to Port Niss (Ness) via Barabhas (Barvas), 4-6 times daily; to Arnol, Siabost (Shawbost), Càrlabhagh (Carloway), Calanais (Callanish), and back to Stornoway, ‘West Side Circular’, 4-6 times daily; to Bear- naraigh (Great Bernera) via Gearraidh na h-Aibhne (Garynahine), 4 daily; to Uig District, 3-4 daily; to Ranais (Ranish), 6-8 times daily. There are also buses from Stornoway to Tarbert and Leverburgh on Harris (for the ferry to North Uist), T01851-705050, 4-5 times daily, Mon-Sat. Bus timetables are available from the tourist office.

Ferry

CalMac runs a ferry service to Ullapool, 2-3 times daily (Jun-end Aug), 2 hrs 40 mins, and 2 daily Mon-Sat in winter. Contact CalMac offices in Stornoway, T01851-702361, for further details.

Car and cycle hire

Car and bike rental is available at good rates from Lewis Car Rentals, 52 Bayhead St, T01851-703760; Mackinnon Self Drive, 18 Inaclete Rd, T01851-702984, hires cars; Alex Dan’s Cycle Centre, 67 Kenneth St, T01851-704 025. Mon-Sat 0900-1800, rents bikes for £12.50 per day and £40 per week.
