Bharraigh (Barra)

It may be tempting to overlook the little island of Barra, only about 8 miles long by 5 miles wide, but that would be a mistake, as it’s one of the most beautiful of all the islands in the Outer Hebrides – ‘Barradise’ indeed. Here, despite an appalling lack of public toilets and much needed facilities for campers (wild camping is tolerated) you’ll find the best of the islands in miniature – beaches, machair, peat-covered hills, tiny crofting communities and Neolithic remains. A couple of days spent on Barra, including excursions to the wild and beautiful lands of Vatersay and the outlying (deserted) Isle of Mingulay, gives a real taste of Hebridean life. Gaelic and the traditional fishing culture is also strong here but, with its Catholicism, Barra is arguably more laid-back than its northern neighbours which strictly observe the Sabbath.

Barra is not too big to really feel like an island. It is fun to walk round the north end of the island in a circular route from the 'airport' (a strip of sand). Seal Beach (well named) to the west of the island is delightful. Castlebay, the main port and capital is extremely friendly..
