The MR1 continues north and on the right is the new Maguga Dam, some 12 km south of Pigg’s Peak. A joint venture with South Africa, the Komati River was damned in 2002 and has now formed a picturesque lake surrounded by green hills. There’s an alternative Maguga Dam loop road to Pigg’s Peak that veers off 26 km north of Motjane, which offers view points. Pigg’s Peak is a small, straggling town was named after William Pigg, a French gold prospector who came here in 1884. There was a working gold mine here until 1954, although no great fortunes were ever recovered. There’s nothing here to warrant a stop, other than to stock up on cool drinks and petrol. From Pigg’s Peak, the MR20 dirt road, heads west to the border post at Bulembu/Josefsdal (daily 0800-1600). Beyond here it’s a short 39-km drive on the R40 to Barberton .
