Simunye is a small town that is quite unusual in that the centre lies behind the boom gate of the Royal Swazi Sugar Corporation that owns the surrounding sugar plantations. There are two sugar mills here and between April and November, look out for the cane-cutters in the fields who also burn the cane as they cut it; it is quite a sight to see the (carefully controlled) flames licking through the plantations. There is nothing much here but it is a stop-off en route to Hlane, Mlawula and the border with Mozambique at Lomahasha/ Namaacha. The Simunye Country Club offers a fine buffet lunch and there’s a petrol station and small Spar supermarket. The main road to Simunye coming north skirts Hlane Game Sanctuary and there are amusing if sobering signposts warning cyclists and pedestrians to beware of lion and elephant.
