Big Bend is named after the loop of the Lusutfu River that passes by the town. The land around Big Bend is covered in sugar plantations and the Ubombo Ranches sugarmill in town is the area’s main processing centre. The terrain here is very similar to South Africa’s northern KwaZulu Natal, which is only 50 km to the south. The town is a quiet, neatly laid out settlement with a small shopping centre and craft centre, Emoya Crafts, which sells crafts from all over Swaziland – ethnic clothing, glassware, candles, cotton rugs, place mats, tablecloths, batiks, baskets and ethnic jewellery.
