The Central Highlands run through this varied region. North of the highlands is the Caribbean, with secluded coves and popular resorts such as Puerto Colombia. Straddling the mountains is the birders’ paradise of Parque Nacional Henri Pittier. Two coastal national parks, Morrocoy, which lies offshore, and Los Médanos, around the old city of Coro, are further highlights of this area. West of Coro is the city and lake of Maracaibo, for most Venezuelans, a region summed up in three letters – oil. For others, it can be summed up in four letters – heat. Both are certainly true. To the south, though, are the eastern extremities of the Andean mountain chain, with quaint villages, lakes and high passes on the way to the Sierra Nevada de Mérida.
