Beautiful sandy bays, islands, forested slopes and a strong colonial influence all contribute to make this one of the most visited parts of the country. The western part, which is relatively dry, has the two main cities, Barcelona and Cumaná, which is possibly the oldest Hispanic city on the South American mainland. IAs you go east, you find some splendid beaches. Off shore are two of Venezuela’s prime holiday attractions, Isla de Margarita, a mix of the overdeveloped and the quiet, and the island paradise of the Los Roques archipelago.
