The islands off Semporna stand along the edge of the continental shelf, which drops away to a depth of 200 m. The reefs surrounding these islands have around 70 genera of coral, placing them, in terms of their diversity, on a par with Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. More than 200 species of fish have also been recorded in these waters.
Ever since Jacques Cousteau ‘discovered’ Sipadan in 1989 it has become a shangri-la for serious divers and is regularly voted one of the top dive destinations in the world. But Sipadan Island is not just for scuba divers: it is a magnificent, tiny tropical island with pristine beaches and crystal-clear water that can be enjoyed by even the most amateur of snorkellers.
