Semporna is a small fishing Bajau town at the end of the peninsula and is the main departure point for Sipadan Island, which has achieved legendary status for divers and snorkellers. It has a lively and very photogenic market, spilling out onto piers over the water, and is known for its seafood. There are scores of small traditional fishing boats, many with outriggers and square sails. A regatta is held in March. The town is built on an old coral reef, said to be 35,000 years old, which was exposed by the uplift of the seabed. Many illegal Filipino immigrants pass through Semporna, which gives the place a different feel from other Malay towns. In the shallow channels off Semporna there are fishing villages built on stilts.
