Danum Valley’s 438 sq km of virgin jungle is the largest expanse of undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah. Due to its size and remoteness, Danum Valley is home to some of Sabah’s rarest animals and plants.
Sumatran rhinoceros have been recorded, as have elephant, clouded leopards, orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, crimson langur, pig-tailed macaques, sambar deer, bearded pigs, Western tarsier, sun bears and 275 species of bird including hornbills, rufous picolet, flowerpeckers and kingfishers. The dipterocarp forest is some of the oldest, tallest and most diverse in the world, with 200 species of tree per ha.
Features include a canopy walkway, a heart-stoppingly springy platform 107 m long and 27m above the ground, an ancient Dusun burial site, waterfalls and a self-guided trail.
