Perhentian Islands

The beautiful Perhentian Islands are just over 20 km off the coast and separated by a narrow sound with a strong current. Despite development in recent years, with more hotels, restaurants, bars, diving outfits and noise, the Perhentians remain a paradise, with excellent diving and snorkelling, magnificent white-sand beaches and some of the best places for swimming on the east coast.

Of the two islands, Perhentian Besar (big island) is generally more popular with families as it houses slightly more upmarket resorts, although huts on the beach are also available. Perhentian Kecil (small) is simpler and attracts a younger crowd of party-going backpackers. There is a fishing village and a turtle hatchery in the middle of Long Beach (Pasir Panjang) on Perhentian Kecil. Note All visitors must pay a conservation fee of RM5 when visiting the islands.
