South of Ayer Itam, Kek Lok Si Temple (0900-1800, free, donation to climb the 30-m tower, bus No 201 and 204, followed by a 5-min walk) sprawls for 12 ha and can be seen from some distance away. It took Burmese, Chinese and Thai artisans, who were shipped in especially, two decades to build it. The seven-tier pagoda, or Ban Po, combines Chinese design with Thai-Buddhist and Burmese, and is covered with thousands of gilded statues.
