With a backdrop of the Bintang Mountains, Taiping is one of the oldest towns in Malaysia. Around 1840, Chinese immigrants started mining tin in the area and it is the only big Malaysian town with a Chinese name. The town is busy and friendly, with a close-knit, community atmosphere. There is more colonial-era architecture here than in many of Malaysia’s towns; there are some fine examples on Jalan Kota, Jalan Main and Jalan Station.
