The sleepy settlement of Bario (Bareo) lies in the Kelabit Highlands, a plateau 1000 m above sea level close to the Kalimantan border in Indonesia. The undulating Bario valley is surrounded by mountains and fed by countless small streams that in turn feed into a maze of irrigation canals. Bario is only accessible by air or via a seven-day trek from Marudi. For information, see http://www.kelabit.net. The best time to visit is March to October.
