Four kilometres southeast of Semarapura is an important arts centre where artists still practise the classical Wayang-style of painting. Most of the artist families live in the banjar Sangging area of town. Artists from this village painted the original ceiling in the Kerta Gosa in Semarapura in the 18th century, as well as the recent restoration, using the muted natural colours (reds, blacks, blues, greens and ochres) typical of this school.
