The spectacular landscape of Gunung Batur is one of the most visited inland areas on Bali. Despite the hawkers, bustle and general commercialization, it still makes a worthwhile trip. The huge crater – 20 km in diameter – contains within it Danau Batur and the active Gunung Batur (1710 m), with buckled lava flows on its slopes. The view at dawn from the summit is stunning. Although these days Gunung Batur is less destructive than Gunung Agung, it is the most active volcano on Bali having erupted 20 times during the past 200 years. Danau Batur in the centre of the caldera is considered sacred.
