Moshi and Marangu

Moshi is the first staging post on the way to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and a pleasant place to spend a few days organizing your trip. It’s an unusual African town in that it has very few European or Asian residents, unlike Arusha. Climbing expeditions depart from the town into Kilimanjaro National Park early each morning. The two peaks of this shimmering snow- capped mountain can be seen from all over the town and it dominates the skyline except when the cloud descends and hides it from view. Moshi means ‘smoke’ – perhaps either a reference to the giant volcano that once smoked or the regular smoke-like cloud. Marangu is 23 km from Moshi and is the closest village to Kilimanjaro National Park, the entrance to which is 5 km away. Accommodation here is more expensive than Moshi, and if you’re on a tight budget you should plan your assault on the mountain from Moshi.
