Kilwa

Of exceptional historical interest, Kilwa is a group of three settlements magnificently situated on a mangrove-fringed bay dotted with numerous small islands. It grew up as a gold trade terminus and when its fortunes faded some magnificent ruins were left behind. These are said to be some of the most spectacular on the East African coast but are today giving themselves slowly to the encroaching jungle and the relentless cycles of the tide. Once an important centre of Swahili culture and civilization, the baked limestone, coral blocks, the fig tree roots growing through the windows and a few shattered tiles give witness to many years’ habitation here. If Kilwa was in Kenya the place would be full of tourists – it is an extra- ordinarily rewarding place to visit. As it is, it gets just a handful of visitors each week. The town itself is pleasant and quiet, with a few local bars and restaurants and a busy market. The area is, however, beginning to see changes due to potential industrial developments involving oil and biofuels: there’s talk of extending the harbour for freight ships, the road to Dar has improved, there are better bus facilities and even a couple of new internet cafés in town (although the electricity supply is still fairly erratic). In the future, as the infrastructure improves, it is unlikely that Kilwa will remain as unspoilt and inaccessible as it is at present.
