It will be the castles that bring you here. The most famous, Krak des Chevaliers, Qala’at Salah ud-Din and Qala’at Marqab, still resonate with reminders of the Crusades and the legacy they left. But this region offers so much more than just castles. The forest- clad mountains of the Jebel Ansariye and fertile coastal plains are a breath of fresh air after Syria’s semi-arid interior.
This region’s Mediterranean coastline stretches for over 180 km and, although most of the beach resorts fall well short of sun and sand worshippers’ expectations, it is where you’ll find the two major towns. Lattakia is a vibrant, modern city that amazes travellers with its liberal party atmosphere, while Tartus is a relaxed holiday town that has a fascinating dilapidated old city. Both towns make excellent bases for further exploration of the region.
Running parallel to the coast is the Jebel Ansariye range; isolating the coastal plain from the rest of the country. This relatively narrow strip of mountains hosts a verdant landscape of undulating terraced hills of olive groves, tobacco and orchards, rising to steep and inaccessible peaks clad in thick forest. This is the least visited region of Syria and also the most beautiful. This is also where you’ll find those Crusader castles, some in a near pristine state of preservation and others mere crumbling ruins, but all of which will leave you awe-struck at the sheer brilliance of their design.
