Hama

Hama’s attractive setting along the Orontes river has long made it a favoured stop on any Syrian journey. Famed for its huge norias (or waterwheels), whose groans and creaks are the backdrop to time spent here, Hama’s relaxed, traveller-friendly outlook make it a good place to linger. The town’s tranquil atmosphere belies the tragedy of its past. In 1982 this town became the setting for one of the most brutal incidents of Hafaz al-Assad’s rule when an uprising was harshly crushed by government troops, killing thousands and destroying much of the old town.

Rebuilt since then, Hama today has excellent accommodation options and is a good base for exploring the surrounding region. While the cooler months of April and September are the best times to visit in terms of the climate, it is during the summer months that you can see the otherwise idle norias in action.
