Qamishle

This dusty border town has nothing of special interest for the traveller, but for those arriving from or travelling on to eastern Turkey, it is the main gateway into the region. It is also a good base from which to visit Ain Diwar and Ras al-Ain. As well as having a large Kurdish population, the town is also home to a substantial number of Christians of various dominations and it’s a friendly place, quick to welcome strangers. Despite this, be aware that Qamishle’s recent past is mired by outbreaks of violence. In 2004 riots broke out here during a football match between a local Kurdish team and a team from Deir ez-Zor. The government crackdown that followed left 15 dead. Since then there have been sporadic outbreaks of conflict between government forces and the local Kurdish population. If you’re planning on visiting, you are advised to check the situation beforehand.
