The C33 tar road heads due north from just outside Karibib and 48 km later arrives at the small, sleepy, historical town of Omaruru. Set in the heart of game-farm country, the town is surrounded by an impressive array of mountains, the most prominent being the Oruwe or Omaruru koppie southeast of town. Omaruru is renowned in Namibia these days for having one of the country’s few vineyards, the Kristall Kellerei, and is a centre of mineral production and trading.
Rock art
AiAiba Farm, 52 km west of Omaruru on the D2315 (follow signs), is said to have one of the largest collections of rock paintings in Namibia. Spread over an area of 2000 ha are a host of rock paintings depicting both humans and animals, as well as a range of Stone Age tools and jewellery which have been left in their original spots. There are daily guided walks and 4WD trips intended to give visitors a real insight into the paintings and tools and to ensure the preservation of the sites. Bookings should be made beforehand through the AiAiba Lodge).
