Known to the Herero-speaking people as Oueverumue, or ‘narrow gate’, the Waterberg Plateau, between the Kleine and Grosse Waterberg, is Namibia’s only mountain game park. The plateau rises up to 200 m above the surrounding plain, extending some 50 km by 16 km. The sharp barrier of the plateau presents a stark contrast to the monotonous, scrubby, bushveld plain below, and has operated as a game sanctuary for endangered species since 1972. Today, it is of interest for its rare animal populations, atypical flora and striking sandstone topography, as well as being the scene of a historic encounter between German and Herero troops.
