About 35 km southwest of Kendu Bay, Homa Bay is an unremarkable ramshackle market town running along two main streets, with a covered market and one reasonable place to stay on the lake – the Homa Bay Tourist Hotel . Most people rely on fishing here though over recent years, water hyacinth has periodically plagued the lakeshore. Above town rises the 1751 m Mount Homa, known by the Luo as Got Asego (‘famous mountain’), which is the highest of many extinct volcanic plugs that scatter the region. It is possible to climb to the top but it’s a scramble through thick thorny bushes and the only paths are those made by goats. Beyond Homa Bay, the road goes to Mbita Point, a small rural community and a collection point for boats to Lake Victoria’s islands (below).
