Set in picturesque undulating hills in some of the most fertile land of the country and with abundant sunshine and rainfall, Kisii is a very lively and fast-growing town, although unfortunately it was another Western Kenyan town hit hard by the 2007 post-election violence. As with so many other towns in agricultural areas, the market here is buzzing and has an excellent array of fresh fruit and vegetables. The town lies on a fault line, so earth tremors are not uncommon. This is the home of the Gusii people, and is famous for its soapstone, although you may try to buy some in vain as most of what is locally produced is bought up by traders to stock the tourist shops in Nairobi and on the coast.

Getting There
Kisii is about 115 km from Kisumu on the A1. At the time of writing the road was in a terrible state and was severely damaged during the 2007 post-election violence as barricades were put up outside of Kisii, but it has been ear-marked to be re-tarred. Matatus to Kisumu take 2 hrs and the matatu stand is on the main road that runs through town, Moi Highway. There is another matatu stand 2 blocks east of the market. Buses to Nairobi go via Kericho and Nakuru and the Akamba Bus office is also on Moi Highway near the post office.
