There’s a busy goat, cattle and camel market here, in addition to the fruit and vegetable market, though security problems with nomadic bandit groups operating to the north up to the Ethiopian border have disrupted livestock raising, leading to a fall in prosperity. Petrol is available and there is a branch of Barclays Bank (no ATM) and a post office (the last town to have these facilities until you reach either Maralal or Marsabit). It is also the last place to have a good supply of provisions. The social life in the town revolves around drinking and chewing miraa. George Adamson who was later to become internationally famous along with his wife, Joy, for hand-rearing Elsa, the lioness featured in Born Free, was a game warden in Isiolo prior to becoming a celebrity. The town is also closest to the entrance of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, situated about 15 km to the southwest .
