This is a village of mud and thatched huts of a few hundred people on the western side of the island, about 8 km from town, where you can see dhows being built and repaired on the beach. The easiest way to get there is to hire a dhow between a group – you will have to negotiate the price and can expect to pay around US$30-40 for the boat. Alternatively you can hire a donkey – ask at your hotel. A third option is to walk, although you should leave early as it gets very hot. The walk will take a couple of hours and is quite complicated. You want to turn-off the main street roughly opposite Petley’s and keep walking west inland. Ask for directions from there; you want to keep going in the same direction of the telephone wires which go to Matondoni – if you follow these you should get there eventually.
