This island is just to the north of Lamu and has the airstrip on it. It is very easy to get to and is a popular day trip to see the ruins at Takwa. The island is about the size of Lamu but has only a small permanent population – partly because of a shortage of fresh water and thus cultivable land. About a fifth of the island is made up of sand dunes and sandy flat land with just thorn bushes and palms. Another three fifths of the island are mangrove swamps and muddy creeks. The island is separated from the mainland by the narrow Mkanda Channel and the main port is Ras Kilimdini, which is located on the northern side of the island.

Getting There
Ins and outs
Access to Manda Island and the towns is by way of motorized ferry to the airstrip as well as by dhow. However dhow is the easiest as it will take you closer to the ruins, otherwise you will have to walk across the island. The dhow will cost about US$30-40 for a group of four to five people. It takes about 1½ hours and is dependent on the tides. You may have to wade ashore through the mangrove swamp.
