Nanyuki (meaning ‘place of red water’ in the Masai language) is a small upcountry town, located to the northwest of Mount Kenya, which dates back to about 1907 when it was used by white settlers as a trading centre and for socializing. The first settlers arrived to find a few Masai manyattas and a great deal of game. The town was established as a trading centre and still has a country atmosphere; today it is home to the Kenyan Air Force as well as a British army base. Despite this it is a fairly sleepy kind of town and retains some of its colonial character. Nanyuki is usually visited by people planning to use the Sirimon or Buguret trails up Mount Kenya. Its good range of shops provides its only interesting diversion. The town serves as the supply centre for ranchers on the Laikipia Plateau , as well as the nearby tourist hotels in the foothills of the mountain. On the main road just 1.5 km to the south of Nanyuki there are signposts marking the equator, and more than a few pushy souvenir sellers.
