The most recent vacation settlements on the Red Sea include the El-Gouna Resort 20km/12mi north of Hurghada.
Between the coastal highway and the coast, a good-sized tourist village with its own airport, marina and golf course was created. There are artificial lagoons throughout the settlement, whose buildings are all in the typical Egyptian style. Those who find Hurghada too large and busy will be more likely to feel at home here.

Air
Fastlink Egypt, T02-2267 1500, www.fast linkegypt.com. Weekly flights to Cairo. At just 20 km away, Hurghada airport is so close, and flights so frequent, it’s easier to just hop on a bus and transfer between towns. Taxis from Hurghada airport cost E£50-70, depending on your bargaining skills.
Bus
Local
Shuttle buses around El-Gouna cost E£5 for daily ticket and E£15 weekly ticket. Recently imported are some exotic buses from Pakistan to add real colour to the shuttle system, and tuk-tuks run around town for E£5.
Long distance
There are several buses commuting between El-Gouna and Cairo daily, run by the El-Gouna Transportation Company. Buses bound for El-Gouna leave from the Hilton Ramsis in central Cairo and Nasr City at 0730, 1345 and 0045. It’s essential to buy your ticket in advance. The ticket booth is next to the Superjet sale’s counter at Mastiro Mall on the museum side of the Ramsis Hilton, downtown. Buses bound for Cairo leave from Gouna at 0930, 1400, 1630, 1930, 0030. Tickets are E£85-100. Buses to Hurghada leave every 20 mins from 0700-2400, E£5. The High Jet Company have cheaper less luxurious buses, E£55-65.
