Cairo Citadel

An imposing medieval fortress offering sweeping views of the city.

Standing tall over Cairo since the 12th century, the Citadel has been home to most of Egypt's rulers from the 13th century to 1874. It is a great example of classic Islamic architecture; the complex is crowned by the domes and minarets of the Muhammad 'Ali mosque.
