This island is a favourite on account of its dazzling white palm-fringed beaches, the fishing, scuba-diving, snorkelling and windsurfing, and the relaxed way of life. The best beaches are enclosed in front of the two expensive hotels, but you should be able to use them. A good, more public beach, is on a spit before Hotel Isla Grande. The island’s 300 black inhabitants make a living from fishing and coconut cultivation. A powerful French-built lighthouse crowns the small island’s northern point, where there is a mirador, reached by steep path. There are a number of colourful African-tinged festivals held here throughout the year. The part of the village to the right of the landing stage is more lively with competing salsa sounds.

Getting There
Buses drop you at La Guaira on the mainland from where lanchas (motor boat) nip across to the island, US$1.50. Tell the boatman if you need a particular locale, Bananas resort, for example. From La Guaira 5 buses per day go to Colón, hourly, 0530-0830, the last at 1300, US$2.85. There may be later buses on Sun and you should expect crowding at such times. Hitching with weekend Panamanians is also possible, all the way to Panama City if you’re lucky!
