Cool, coffee-growing mountain town
Boquete is a town for nature lovers - in addition to all of the hiking, rafting, and zip-lining you can do, the town itself is basically a garden, purposefully teeming with exotic flowers and vines. This is probably the most accessible place to catch wildlife in Panama, and endless opportunities abound for walking through cloud forests and gentle hills. Though Boquete's position in the highlands guarantee that you'll need to pack a long-sleeve shirt, you'll be thankful for a refuge from the Panamanian heat.
But Boquete is on the verge of transformation. Coffee plantations are slowly giving way to retirement communities, as farmers find that selling their land to expats is far more profitable than growing beans. As real estate agencies, interior designers and other businesses catering to retirees start to crowd the main street, it's clear that Boquete's identity is on the line. Visit sooner rather than later, before Boquete turns into just another pretty mountain town overrun with expats.
