Boquete

Cool, coffee-growing mountain town

Boquete is a town for nature lovers - in addition to all of the hiking, rafting, and zip-lining you can do, the town itself is basically a garden, purposefully teeming with exotic flowers and vines. This is probably the most accessible place to catch wildlife in Panama, and endless opportunities abound for walking through cloud forests and gentle hills. Though Boquete's position in the highlands guarantee that you'll need to pack a long-sleeve shirt, you'll be thankful for a refuge from the Panamanian heat.

But Boquete is on the verge of transformation. Coffee plantations are slowly giving way to retirement communities, as farmers find that selling their land to expats is far more profitable than growing beans. As real estate agencies, interior designers and other businesses catering to retirees start to crowd the main street, it's clear that Boquete's identity is on the line. Visit sooner rather than later, before Boquete turns into just another pretty mountain town overrun with expats.

Boquete is a town at the foot of Volcan Baru, the highest point of Panama, 38 km from the Pan American highway and the city of David, capital of the province of Chiriqui. David is 440 km from the capital city of Panama. In recent years, Boquete has become a favorite place of retreat for the Americans, because of its mild climate for its average height from 1000 to 1400 meters above sea level. Currently building a 4 lane highway from the city of David. There are many good quality hotels and restaurants. Valle Escondido is an excellent hotel and luxury homes. It is a quiet community.

Unexpectedly my favorite place in Panama - you can escape from the mind-numbing heat of the coast and be cooled by the Bajareque off the mountains. It's so easy to feel comfortable here, and really get to know the people and the place.
