The beautiful Lago de Apanás (buses every hour from Jinotega, 20 minutes, US$0.35), 8 km east of Jinotega, is an artificial lake created by the damming of the Río Tuma. The lake is used to produce energy in a hydroelectric plant and is great for fishing, full of guapote (perch) and tilapia. Small enterprises lining the lake will fry fish for visitors and it’s possible to rent a small boat and fish on the lake; ask the locals.
