Matagalpa, with its beautiful mountains and diverse scenery, is one of the best hiking areas of Nicaragua. A coffee boom in the late 1990s benefited the region greatly, but the crash in coffee prices in 2001 has subsequently decimated the fragile local economy. The local festival and holiday on 26 September celebrates the Virgen de las Mercedes.

Terminal Sur (Cotransur) is located near Mercado del Sur and used for all destinations outside the department of Matagalpa.

Terminal Norte, by Mercado del Norte (Guanuca), is for all destinations within the province of Matagalpa including San Ramón and El Tuma. Taxi between terminals US$0.50.Banks
Banco de América Central (BAC and Credomatic), Parque Morazán, 1 c al sur, on Av Central, changes all TCs and cash on Visa and MC and has ATM for most credit and debit cards with Cirrus logo. Banpro, opposite BAC, offers similar services.
