San Juan del Sur

Not long ago this was a secret place, a tiny coastal paradise on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast. In recent years, however, this little town on a big bay has become very popular, first as an escape from the built-up beaches across the international border in Costa Rica to the south, then as a magnet for real estate developers, US retirees and the international wave-hunting crowd. In addition, cruise ships now anchor in its deeper waters and tourists have begun to arrive in quantity. San Juan del Sur is a major destination, increasingly buzzing with activity. And although it has retained its character, it is increasingly starting to resemble Costa Rica. Fortunately, the recently elected Sandinista government has put a damper on the land grab, slowing, if not stopping, the destruction of the coast. It’s no longer the place to experience a country off the beaten path, but there are still plenty of empty beaches and there is no doubt that the coast here is among the most beautiful stretches in Central America.

I was in San Juan del Sur 4 years ago and I am pleased to see how much they have cleaned up their act. The road from the Pan America to San Juan del Sur is in excellent condition. The town itself has it's garbage under control and the store fronts have had a colorful makeover. I was impressed with the beach restaurants too. Some were there before, but have upgraded with bigger, beautiful ranchos and added seating on the beach. In addition to the less expensive hostel style accommodation there seems to be plenty of well appointed vacation rentals that you should consider as well. Surfing is always magic here and is the main reason for tourism. And as always it didn't disappoint. We also went sailing with Pelican Eyes for the day and had a fantastic time riding on horses to the beach with Rancho Chilamate. Both adventures I would highly recommend. We stumbled upon Pau Hana's (restaurant on the beach) Open Mic night for amateurs. Even if you're not one to get up on stage, it's good entertainment. This little town has alot more to offer .. and we're glad we came back :)
