Not long ago this was a secret place, a tiny coastal paradise on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast. In recent years, however, this little town on a big bay has become very popular, first as an escape from the built-up beaches across the international border in Costa Rica to the south, then as a magnet for real estate developers, US retirees and the international wave-hunting crowd. In addition, cruise ships now anchor in its deeper waters and tourists have begun to arrive in quantity. San Juan del Sur is a major destination, increasingly buzzing with activity. And although it has retained its character, it is increasingly starting to resemble Costa Rica. Fortunately, the recently elected Sandinista government has put a damper on the land grab, slowing, if not stopping, the destruction of the coast. It’s no longer the place to experience a country off the beaten path, but there are still plenty of empty beaches and there is no doubt that the coast here is among the most beautiful stretches in Central America.
