The sweeping sandy beach at Santo Domingo is reached via the southern road from Moyogalpa or from Altagracia’s southern exit. Signs mark the turning on to a dirt road that can be very difficult in sections during the rainy season. The road winds through plantain plantations, past a miniature church, down a steep paved section and across a tiny bridge where women do laundry in the creek. The water is very clean upstream from here and great for swimming at its source, El Ojo de Agua (0700-1800, USS$1) where you’ll find a small ranch and some gentle walking trails. The road rises over a pass that allows a view of both cones and then dips into beautiful tropical dry forest and Santo Domingo.
