Oranjestad, the capital of Aruba, is a busy little town where ‘duty-free’ generally implies a discount rather than a bargain. The main shopping area is on Caya G F (Betico) Croes, and streets off it. Many of the buildings in the colourful Antillean style are actually modern and do not date from colonial times as in Willemstad, Curaçao. The former fruit market area on the harbour opposite the Royal Plaza Mall is now a Plaza Cultural, a market place for arts, crafts and food, with performance artists.
