After Calderón the road north descends 700 m into the spectacular arid Guayllabamba gorge and climbs out again to the fertile oasis of Guayllabamba village, noted for its avocados and delicious chirimoyas (custard apples). The area is a popular destination for Quiteños, who flock here on weekends to eat comida típica, especially locro de papas, in a number of good paradores. There are also a couple of hosterías to stay in.
