This bustling commercial border town is 77 km by four-lane highway from Machala. It can be a harrowing place, made worse by the crowds and heat. Always watch your belongings carefully. Border crossings to Peru. Another option is to take a CIFA bus from Guayaquil or Machala directly to Tumbes or Piura, Peru, without stopping in Huaquillas. The ayudantes (drivers’ assistants) are reportedly helpful to travellers during border formalities. There is an iTur information office by the international bridge.

Bus
There is no terminal terrestre, each bus company has its own office, many on Teniente Cordovez . If in a hurry to reach Quito or other highland destinations, it can be faster to change buses in Machala or Guayaquil rather than waiting for the next departure from Huaquillas. There may be checkpoints along the road north from Huaquillas to Machala, so keep your passport to hand. To Machala, with CIFA (at Santa Rosa y Machala) direct1½ hrs, US$2, every hr from 0800-2000; via Arenillas and Santa Rosa, 1¾ hrs, every 20 mins. Also with Ecuatoriano Pullman (Av de la República y 19 de Octubre), 12 daily.
