Until the beginning of the 20th century, Guaranda was the main crossroads between Quito and Guayaquil, but with the construction of the railway and later the opening of newer, faster roads, it has since stagnated. Although not on the tourist trail, there are many sights worth visiting in the province. The climate in Guaranda can be very pleasant with warm days and cool evenings; however, the area is also subject to rain and fog. Of particular interest is the town of Salinas, a model of successful community development.
The Terminal Terrestre is at Eliza Mariño Carvajal, on the way out of town towards Riobamba and Babahoyo. If you are staying in town ask to be dropped off closer to the centre. It is a 15-minute walk uphill from the bus station to the centre.
