Because of its many orchards, flower and tree-lined avenues, parks and gardens, Ambato’s nickname is ‘the city of fruits and flowers’. Since it is the birthplace of the writers Juan Montalvo, Juan León Mera and the artist Juan Benigno Vela, it is also known as the ‘city of the three Juanes’. On a clear day Tungurahua, Chimborazo and Carihuayrazo can be seen from the city.

Getting there and around
The main bus station is on Avenida Colombia y Paraguay, 2 km north from the centre. City buses go there from Parque Cevallos in the city centre, US$0.20. Many hotels are conveniently located within a block or two of the centre, while others are in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Miraflores. Motorists driving through Ambato to other cities should avoid going into the centre as traffic is very congested. The paso lateral, is a bypass road running east of the city.Air
