Guayacanes, Embassy and Juan Dolio beaches, east of Boca Chica, are also popular, especially at weekends when they can be littered and plagued with hawkers (much cleaner and very quiet out of season). The whole area is being developed in a long ribbon of holiday homes, hotels and resorts, and the new highway has improved access. Guayacanes has a nice little beach and the village is less overcrowded than Boca Chica. Buses going along the south coast will drop you, and pick you up again, at the various turn-offs to the beaches. Juan Dolio village is low key, with hotels, apartments, a few small bars, a tour agency and dive shop. Tourist taxis from the Juan Dolio hotels charge US$44 for a return trip to Santo Domingo with a three-hour wait. Taxi to the airport US$20 one-way (T8095262006). East of Juan Dolio is the resort of Villas del Mar, and the beach area of Playa Real, with eight all-inclusive resorts and several apartment developments.
