Puerto Plata, sandwiched between Mount Isabel de Torres and the sea, is the main gateway on the northern coast, but the town itself is not much visited. The old town centre comprises dilapidated wooden houses and other colonial buildings behind warehouses and the power station alongside the docks. A large renovation project was approved for 2007 to restore the old world charm of the historical core. This may include the restoration of 21 Victorian houses, the conversion of the former Sánchez chocolate factory into a cultural centre and the creation of several museums. The seafront drive, the Malecón, sweeps along the beach for about 5 km, between the San Felipe fortress to the west on the point protecting the harbour and Long Beach to the east. Following a World Bank sponsored sewage water project for the town, in 2006 Long Beach was renovated and erosion was countered by bringing in tonnes of sand from Río San Juan. The seafront area was further enhanced by evicting brothels and other seedy establishments, while there are plans to build a boardwalk where open air restaurants and bars will attract visitors.
