Getting there and around

There are good links by road from Santo Domingo (4-lane highway all the way) and Puerto Plata on the coast. Several bus companies have services to the city. There is also an airport for domestic flights.

The long-distance bus terminals are scattered around the city and you will probably have to get a taxi to your destination. You can walk round the centre of the city but suburbs and outlying areas are best reached by bus or carro público. Calle del Sol is the main commercial street, with both vendors and the main shops. In the newer part of the town, Avenida Juan Pablo Duarte and Avenida 27 de Febrero have shopping plazas, banks and fast food restaurants, very much in the US style.

There is a tourist office in the basement of the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento), Av Juan Pablo Duarte; it has little information available, only Spanish spoken.

Banks

Scotiabank, Parque Duarte, others on Calle del Sol between San Luis and Sánchez include Banco Popular (ATM), Banco León (ATM), Banco del Progreso, and BanReservas (ATM). There are also a BanReservas, Banco León and Banco del Progreso on Av 27 de Febrero. The only place you can change traveller’s cheques is the Banco Popular on Calle del Sol esq Mella.

Verizon is at San Luis between Restauración and Independencia, and further out at the junction of Estrella Sadhalá and J P Duarte; take Carro A from the Parque. Tricom is on San Luis between Restauración and Beller, also on Av 27 de Febrero next to Banco León.
