Further north up the Autopista Duarte is La Vega, a quiet place in the beautiful valley of La Vega Real. After the declaration of Independence on 27 February 1844, La Vega was the first place to raise the national flag, on 4 March. It was also the first town to embrace the Restoration Movement in 1863. The town is nothing special and most people only come here to change guaguas or buses or to visit the local archaeological sites , which can be reached by hiring a taxi in the Parque Central or at the bus stations.
