If you head east from Mapocho station, along the river, you arrive at the Parque Forestal. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is located in the wooded grounds and is an extraordinary example of neoclassical architecture, inspired by the Petit Palais in Paris. Inside is a large display of Chilean and foreign painting and sculpture; contemporary art exhibitions are held several times a year. In the west wing of the building is the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (http://www.mac.uchile.cl, US$1.20, take the Bellas Artes metro).
