Puerto Octay is a peaceful and picturesque small town at the north tip of the lake 56 km southeast of Osorno, set amid rolling hills, hedgerows and German-style farmhouses with views over Volcán Osorno. Founded by German settlers in 1852, the town enjoyed a boom period in the late 19th century when it was the northern port for steamships on the lake: a few buildings survive from that period, notably the church and the enormous German-style former convent. Since the arrival of railways and the building of roads, the town has declined. Much less busy than Frutillar or Puerto Varas, Puerto Octay offers an escape for those seeking peace and quiet. Rowing boats and pedalos can be hired for trips on the lake.
