Bahía Inglesa, 6 km south of Caldera and 6 km west of the Pan-American Highway, is popular with Chileans for its beautiful white sandy beaches and unpolluted, clear sea. Although the bay is now dominated by a scallop farm, this is not too noticeable from the beach. The water in this sheltered bay is warmer than around the neighbouring coast and it is safe to swim. Bahía Inglesa is rather expensive and can get crowded in January and February and at weekends, but off season makes a perfect, deserted retreat. Given that it lies almost exactly half way between the capital and San Pedro and has two restaurants almost worth making a detour for, it’s a good choice to break one’s journey. It was originally known as Puerto del Inglés after the visit in 1687 of the English pirate, Edward Davis.
