Copiapó

The capital of Región III Atacama, Copiapó, with a population of 127,000, is an important mining centre with a big mining school and a backdrop of arid hills to the north. Founded in 1744, Copiapó became a prosperous town after the discovery in 1832 of the third largest silver deposits in South America at Chañarcillo. The wealth from Chañarcillo formed the basis of the fortunes of several famous Chilean families – most notably, the Cousiños – and helped finance the first railway line in the southern hemisphere, linking Copiapó to Caldera (1851). These days, Copiapó’s economy still thrives on the large numbers of miners who descend to the city in order to seek distraction and spend their pay cheques. On cool summer nights, people flock to the pleasant, shady Plaza de Armas to chat and watch the world go by.
